List of episodes

Big Brother 23 is the twenty-third season of the American reality television program Big Brother. The season premiered on July 7, 2021, with a live move-in on CBS in the United States and Global in Canada. The show chronicles a group of contestants (known as HouseGuests) living in a house together while being constantly filmed and having no communication with the outside world as they compete to be the last competitor remaining to win a grand prize of $750,000 (an increase of $250,000 from past editions of the show). CBS renewed Big Brother for an additional season on October 28, 2020, the day the previous season concluded. On the same day, Julie Chen Moonves was confirmed to return as host.

The season concluded on September 29, 2021, after 85 days of competition.[1] Xavier Prather was crowned the winner defeating Derek Frazier, becoming the first black HouseGuest to win in the main edition of the show in the second unanimous jury vote in a row and the fourth unanimous jury vote in Big Brother US history (following Dan Gheesling of Big Brother 10, Tamar Braxton of Celebrity Big Brother 2 and Cody Calafiore of Big Brother 22). Tiffany Mitchell was voted as the season's America's Favorite HouseGuest.

Format [edit]

Big Brother depicts a group of contestants, known as HouseGuests, who live inside a custom-built house outfitted with cameras and microphones recording their every move 24 hours a day.[2] The HouseGuests are sequestered in the Big Brother House with no contact with the outside world.[3] During their stay the HouseGuests share their thoughts on events and other HouseGuests inside a private room referred to as the Diary Room.[4] [5] Each week, the HouseGuests compete in several competitions in order to win power and safety inside the house. At the start of each week, the HouseGuests compete in the Head of Household (abbreviated as "HOH") competition.[6] The winner of the HoH competition is immune from eviction and will select two HouseGuests to be nominated for eviction.[7] Then six HouseGuests are selected to compete in the Power of Veto (abbreviated as "PoV") competition: the reigning HoH and the nominees are guaranteed to play with the remaining slots being given to other HouseGuests selected by random draw. The winner of the PoV competition wins the right to either revoke the nomination of one of the nominated HouseGuests or leave them as is. If the veto winner uses this power, the HoH must immediately nominate another HouseGuest for eviction. The PoV winner is also immune from being named as the replacement nominee.[8] On eviction night, all HouseGuests must vote to evict one of the nominees. The Head of Household and the nominees are not allowed to vote. This compulsory vote is conducted in the privacy of the Diary Room by host Julie Chen Moonves. In the event of a tie, the Head of Household will cast the tie-breaking vote in front of all the HouseGuests in the living room. The nominee with the most votes is evicted from the house.[9] The last nine evicted HouseGuests, referred to as the Jury, are sequestered in a separate house following their eviction and ultimately decide the winner of the season. The Jury are not allowed to watch the show except for competitions and ceremonies that include all of the remaining HouseGuests. They are not shown any Diary Room interviews or any footage that may include strategy or details regarding nominations.[10] The viewing public is able to award an additional prize of $50,000 (twice the original $25,000 to their favorite HouseGuest of the season. All evicted HouseGuests are eligible to win this award except for those who either voluntarily leave or are forcibly removed for rule-breaking.[11]

Twists [edit]

Through various interviews, the show's producers, Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan, debuted the twists for the season.[12] [13]

Teams [edit]

HouseGuests were separated into four teams of four during the live premiere night, with two male and two female members in each team. Four Team Captain competitions took place throughout the premiere to decide four Team Captains; the captains (with the houseguests present) then received a brief introduction from two randomly selected houseguests with the option of selecting either of them to be part of their team. As with Big Brother 11 and Big Brother 18, Heads of Household will earn immunity for their entire team.[13] [12] The team phase of the game concluded after the fourth eviction.

Wildcard Competition [edit]

For the first four weeks, the three non-immune teams (i.e., the teams not including the Head of Household) will each select a teammate to compete in the Wildcard Competition; the winning HouseGuest will be given the chance to gain immunity but will be given a Wildcard decision in exchange for that immunity - this decision could affect the game for either the Wildcard winner, their teammates or all HouseGuests.[14] Each HouseGuest could only compete in a Wildcard competition once, unless all other team members had already played.

1 (none) Hannah Christian Kyland Immunity for teammates Christian was required to spin a wheel containing numbers 1, 2 & 3 – the number spun corresponded to the number of teammates he could keep safe for the week in addition to himself. The wheel landed on 1, allowed Christian and one teammate of his choosing, Xavier, immunity for the week.
2 Frenchie Brent Sarah Beth (none) Immunity to swap Sarah Beth had the choice of whether to swap teams with a member of the HoH's team (Queens), and thereby give herself immunity and take immunity from the swapped teammate (who would take Sarah Beth's spot on Kings), or decline immunity altogether. Sarah Beth declined the wildcard immunity offer, choosing to stay on her team instead.
3 Britini Derek X. (none) Tiffany Immunity for rivals Tiffany had the option to accept safety, however, the Jokers and the Aces would have a chance for one of their teammates to become safe with a game of chance. Tiffany declined the wildcard immunity offer, thereby preventing a member of the Jokers or Aces to gain immunity.
4 Azah Whitney (none) Claire Immunity for the team or Immunity until jury Claire had the choice between safety for herself and the rest of her team for the week, or safety for only herself until jury. Claire picked safety for herself, leaving Kyland and Tiffany vulnerable for eviction.

High Roller's Room [edit]

For weeks six through eight, the High Roller's Room opened for the final eleven HouseGuests, and an in-game currency, "BB Bucks" (BB$), was introduced. America distributed a certain amount of BB$ to each HouseGuest through text voting; the three HouseGuests with the most votes receives BB$100, the next three receives BB$75, and the remaining HouseGuests receives BB$50. For week eight, additional BB$ were determined via an envelope draw after the HoH competition. HouseGuests are not required to use their BB$ immediately and could hold them for as long as possible. HouseGuests could also earn BB$ during the game when the High Roller's Room was in play.

While the room is open, HouseGuests could use their BB$ to play a game of chance. If they won the game, they would win a power. The stronger the power, the more expensive the game.[15] Powers won are only allowed to be used within the week that it was obtained.

  3. Following the Week 8 HoH competition, the HouseGuests each picked envelopes at random containing either a bonus BB$50 or BB$100. In the High Roller's Room, it was revealed that Alyssa, Derek F., Kyland, and Sarah Beth received BB$100, while Azah, Claire, Hannah, Tiffany, and Xavier received BB$50.

Back-to-Back Double Evictions [edit]

This season is the first to feature back-to-back Double Eviction nights over two consecutive weeks instead of Double Evictions spread out by a few weeks, an early eviction night, or a Triple Eviction as done in previous seasons.[16] As a result, Claire, Alyssa, Tiffany and Hannah were all evicted in the span of only two weeks.[17]

Development [edit]

CBS announced that Big Brother had been renewed for a twenty-third season on October 28, 2020, with Chen Moonves confirmed to return as host on the same day. On May 13, 2021, it was announced that the season would be premiering on July 7, 2021.[18] Key art for the season was released by Entertainment Weekly on June 16, 2021.[19]

Casting [edit]

On January 22, 2021, Robyn Kass announced that Kassting, Inc. would not be providing casting services for the upcoming season.[20] It was announced that Jesse Tannenbaum, former Big Brother casting producer and casting director for Big Brother: Over The Top and Survivor, would be in charge of the casting efforts for Big Brother 23.[21] Several casting producers who cast the show under Kassting, Inc. also returned to cast BB23.[22]

Production design [edit]

Photos of the house were revealed on July 5, 2021, via various social media accounts and entertainment news outlets.[23] When explaining the theme executive producer Allison Grodner stated "Everyone's longing for vacations, to get out there and so forth. So we really wanted to bring a sense of adventure and vacation fun and a club atmosphere to the house."[24] Immediately upon entering the house two neon signs hang in the entry way, one reading "BB Beach Club" and the other stating "No Risk, No Reward."[25] The living room, known as "The Seaview Lobby," features floor-to-ceiling azure and teal tinted glass windows, a handmade shark lamp, and a coffee table built of playing cards.[26] [27] Each of the three bedrooms downstairs are based on different water elements; the first bedroom, known as "The Sea Glass Room," contains orange and aqua illuminated sea glass on the walls and has four beds, the next bedroom, named "The Yacht Club," holds four nautical-themed yacht beds, the final bedroom, called "The Reef Room," features a coral reef design, holding three beds.[27] A shark-themed kitchen and dining room contains an L-shaped kitchen island with the walls containing numerous shark and fish artwork.[28] Gym equipment for the season has been relocated inside taking the place of the former downstairs lounge, while in previous seasons any gym equipment was located in the backyard, the gym and bathroom are collectively known as "The Spa" and for the first time, a wall has been constructed closing off the kitchen from the bathroom area.[29] [28] On the second floor, the upstairs lounge, called "The Poker Parlor," is based on a casino game of poker and has black, white, and gold themed furniture; walls of the room have also been constructed on three sides effectively closing off the room, in previous seasons the area only featured railings overlooking the kitchen and dining room.[30] The Head of Household bedroom, named "The VIP Cabana" has been designed around a seaside cabana theme.[31]

HouseGuests [edit]

As a response to racial reckoning in the United States and a lack of diverse representation on television, CBS reality shows enacted a policy whereby at least 50% of the cast must be BIPOC starting with the 2021–22 broadcast season.[32] [33] The HouseGuests for the twenty-third season were announced on July 1, 2021.[34] [35] Among the 16 HouseGuests is professional boxer Joe Frazier's son Derek Frazier. Christie Valdiserri, a 27-year-old professional dancer from North Hollywood, California, was originally part of the cast, but tested positive for COVID-19 while in sequester and therefore could not compete, hence exiting the season. She was replaced by Claire Rehfuss.[36] [37]

Episodes [edit]

  1. ^ In Episode 35, the final three HouseGuests looked back over their time in the Big Brother house. Flashbacks included clips from previous Days in the house, while the current Day in the house was 79.
  2. ^ Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the first five evicted HouseGuests (Travis, Frenchie, Brent, Whitney, and Christian) attended the finale via live video call.

Have-Nots [edit]

Each week, a group of HouseGuests are selected to become Have-Nots for the week. Those selected to be Have-Nots are restricted to a slop diet and cold showers, and are required to sleep in an uncomfortable bedroom.

The Have-Nots for the season were selected via the following means:

  • For Week 1, the team that finished last in the Head of Household competition were named Have-Nots for the week.
  • For Weeks 2–4, that week's Head of Household selected one of the opposing teams to become Have-Nots.
  • For Weeks 5 and 7, that week's Head of Household selected the Have-Nots for the week.
  • For Week 9, the first three HouseGuests to be eliminated in the HoH competition were named Have-Nots for the week.

For Weeks 6 and 8 there were no Have-Nots with the Have-Not phase for the season ultimately ending in Week 10.

Notes [edit]

  • ^Note 1  : Christian's Wildcard Decision was to give immunity to one additional teammate; he chose Xavier.
  • ^Note 2  : Claire's Wildcard Decision was to choose one week of immunity for her team or immunity until Jury for herself. Claire chose immunity until Jury.
  • ^Note 3  : As Kyland bet on Alyssa for the Veto Derby through the High Roller's Room, he won his own Power of Veto for the week. At the Veto Ceremony, Kyland first used his veto on Claire, named Britini as the replacement, and then Alyssa did not use her veto.
  • ^Note 4  : Alyssa won the Chopping Block Roulette in the High Roller's Room - allowing her to save one of the nominees, with a roulette wheel determining the replacement nominee. Alyssa saved Derek F. and Xavier was chosen by the wheel as the replacement nominee - this nomination is noted in bold. Alyssa and Derek F. also received immunity for the week.
  • ^Note 5  : Xavier took the "3rd Nominee" punishment in Week 7's PoV Competition and was automatically nominated - this nomination is noted in bold and his nomination did not need a replacement if the veto was used on him.
  • ^Note 6  : Claire won the Coin of Destiny in the High Roller's Room, allowing her to participate in a coin-flip to replace Tiffany as HoH. Claire won the coin-flip and anonymously replaced Tiffany as HoH - Claire's nominations were made in secret. Additionally, to disguise Claire's HoH reign, she cast a vote during the eviction which would only count for a tie-break (this vote was to evict Sarah Beth), and was required to throw the next HoH Competition. Tiffany remained immune for the week and could compete in the following HoH.
  • ^Note 7  : This week was a double eviction week. Following the first eviction, the remaining HouseGuests played a week's worth of games, including HoH and Veto competitions, and Nomination, Veto and Eviction ceremonies, during the remainder of the live show, culminating in a second eviction for the week.
  • ^Note 8  : During the finale, the Jury members voted for which finalist should win the season.

Reception [edit]

Controversies and criticisms [edit]

Some viewers accused "The Cookout", an all-black six-person alliance, of racism and making voting decisions solely based on race. The alliance was formed as a collective in hopes of combatting the trend from past seasons of minorities being evicted early, as well as having one of its members becoming the main series' first-ever black winner.[77] [78] The "Cookout" term itself stems from African-American culture.[79] Julie Chen Moonves disapproved of the criticism on the topic, saying that the alliance "is not [racist]" in her opinion, adding that "it's hard for some people who are not of color to understand the importance of [The Cookout] making it this far".[80]
